Abstract

The influence of Islam in the community of the Osing, in the Indonesian regency of Banyuwangi, is at odds with the traditional beliefs and local customs.  Before the introduction of Islam, the people of Osing practiced a belief system based on myths and legends. of the introduction of Islam, as an organized religion,  resulted in a shift from these mystical beliefs towards the more practical and rational values espoused by Islam. Islam beliefs, in concert with the surviving aspects of the traditional beliefs of the Osing community, as well as the influence of Hindu-Buddhist culture, are now practices simultaneously in Osing. This paper will present the theory that the assimilation of traditional values and cultures into the Islamic religion practiced in Osing, along with the concept of “da'wah,†has helped Islam spread in the region, and that the harmonious coexistence and melding of the these belief systems can be seen as a model in the defense against radicalism.
