Abstract

Autonomous learning has been an outstanding concept for English as foreign language learners especially for Indonesian students whose language environment is diverse and less of the communities communicate in English. Indonesian students need more effort to be fluent in English than those who live in English speaking country. The reality of teaching and learning English shows that Indonesian education has gradually changed from a spoon-feed lecturing into autonomous learning. The fact also unveils that the existence of advanced technology unlocks opportunities for students to study with their interest and style. Therefore, the researcher conducted a study which is aimed at investigating autonomous learning by EFL students, examining students’ awareness, as well as their self-regulated language learning process by using technology. A survey was administered to find out the technology used for learning, the competence level in autonomous learning, and the awareness in learning English. The subject of the study is the students from several universities in Malang:  UM, UMM, UIN, ITN, STT, and STIKI. The Results showed that students are using technology as helpful media to learn and practice English autonomously in different kind of activities. With the help of technology such as computer or mobile application, video, social media, and online books, students are easier to access information in English so they can improve their English skill.
